Analysis of the Results

A few precautions should be taken when interpreting the results:

• Just because there is no match does not mean the work was not looted; in fact, not all looted works are included in this collection of photographs (other sources should be consulted).

• Just because there is no match does not mean the photograph is not in the 209SUP collection; poor image quality may prevent a match.

• Just because there is a match does not mean the artwork was looted (for example, not all artworks appearing in pre-war interior photographs were necessarily looted).

• If a match is found, the artwork may have been looted and then returned; in all cases, you must consult the complete file to understand what happened.

Exploring a Photographic Collection with Multiple Origins

Disclaimer: References to collectors on the backs of photographs should be treated with caution. They do not constitute proof of ownership of the artwork and must be verified, in particular, the claims filed with the Art Recovery Commission (CRA) or the Office of Private Property and Interests (OBIP).

Photographs of artworks may be associated with collectors who were victims of looting, perpetrators of looting, intermediaries, institutions, or storage locations.

It is also possible to explore the collection using predefined tags or to perform a free-text search.

This collection is rich and complex. While the majority of the photographs come from claims filed with the Art Recovery Commission, some photographs belong to other collections.
